I know from speaking to my female clients that they were once wary of training with weights as either, they didn’t think it was the right method for them (being ladies), they didn’t know how to go about it and/or they thought it would make them bulky.
Thankfully the weights area is no longer filled with just bodybuilders who look like they could crush cars with their bare hands (I appreciate that’s a huge generalisation, but you know where I’m coming from…and is probably the image conjured up in many women’s heads when they think of strength training), thankfully (and finally!) you will now find more and more women jostling for position among the free weights, and that, my friends, makes me very happy indeed. Some of these women may have felt intimidated by the weights room at first, but I can pretty much guarantee that nobody else in there would have batted an eyelid. In the nicest possible way, nobody else cares about what you’re doing in the gym, they’re all focused on themselves and what they’re doing.
Having said that, I used to be like you at the gym. I would skirt around the fixed resistance machines, not having a clue what any of them did, what order I should do them in, what the little yellow pully did or what weight I should choose, and I was too afraid to ask anyone for fear of looking stupid, and don’t even get me started on the free weights section, at the time, to me that area was out of bounds. I CANNOT tell you how much I wish I could go back, slap myself in the face, grow some kahunas and bloody ask someone to help me!! But what’s done is done, and we can’t dwell on the past.
I don’t want this for you. I want to help you conquer any fears or misconceptions you have about lifting weights. Ask any of my clients how they feel now that they have implemented regular strength training sessions into their life, and they will all tell you how much stronger, fitter and sometimes taller they feel!! They sleep better, they’re happier, they have a better relationship with food and all because they took the first step and gave me a call. I have taken on clients who have never lifted more than a bag of sugar before and turned them into strength training enthusiasts!
If you’re new to the world of resistance training (or have a little experience but aren't sure if you're on the right track) and you want to realise all the benefits a regular strength training programme can bring to your life, send me an email now and tell me all about your goals. It would be my pleasure to help you.
