Before I go on, what do we mean when we say 'spot-reduce fat'? Have you ever said to yourself, 'I'd like to get rid of the fat over my stomach...or thighs...or wherever'? By saying that, you've chosen a specific area of your body that you'd like to lose fat from, that's essentially what is meant by 'spot-reduce'.
You can’t dictate where you will lose body fat from when you start to lose it and doing a gazillion sit-ups is not going to get rid of your belly fat. You’ll strengthen the muscles underneath*, but until you do something about the fat that’s lying over the top of them, you’re never going to reveal those beautiful abs.
*by the way, there are far better exercises for strengthening the abdominals than sit-ups!
To reduce overall body fat, you need to take a long hard look at your diet, be honest with yourself, cut down on the calories and/or move more. This will create a negative energy balance which will lead to fat-loss.
We all have so-called problem areas of body fat that we’d like to get rid of, so this is when you either have to put even more effort into your diet and training or celebrate the progress you’ve made thus far and accept those soft, stubborn little pockets. If you are at this point, perhaps it’s time to take a step back and reflect on what’s making you happy. If you’re happy when you look at your reflection in the mirror, if you generally feel good and happy on a daily basis, if you’re sleeping and eating well and are surrounded with other people who make you feel good then that’s a pretty good place to be in my book. If, on the other hand, you’re not happy with your body image and it’s taking up valuable thinking time in your head each day, it’s time to do something about it.
Yes, life is not all about aesthetics, but for some people, not feeling good about their own body contributes to negative feelings about themselves and triggers all sorts of other behaviours. Flip that on its head, where the actions you take and behaviours you create lead to you feeling more confident and proud of yourself and your abilities, those actions are almost infectious and as a bi-product, you will not only feel inspired yourself, but you will inspire others around you. Behaviour breeds behaviour – I’ll never forget the first time I heard that statement.
Anyway, I’ve gone off on a massive tangent, I can’t even remember what I started talking about….oh yeah, spot-reduction! No, it’s not a thing.
Where’s your head at with all of the above? Are you in a place where you’re not quite as happy as you should be with your body image and want to do something about? If the answer is yes, there are 2 ways I can help:
