It may almost seem too simple but using a smaller plate at mealtimes is a great way to reduce your overall calorie consumption, without really trying.
We eat with our eyes and you’ve heard the expression “eyes bigger than your stomach”. Do you fill your plate with food, no matter what size it is? Using a smaller plate gives the illusion of having more food on it, and research has shown that reducing the size of a plate from 12" to 10" results in a 22% reduction in calories*, assuming that the average evening meal contains roughly 800 calories. This means that you have the potential to lose roughly 10lbs over the course of one year with this simple trick alone!
The next time you're dishing up, try using a smaller plate and see if you feel satisfied after your meal.
